Cookbook review

The title says it all..FAMILY COOKBOOK...BUDGET-FRIENDLY...the recipes are very easy to prepare and don't call for alot of items not usually found in the home. My husband, who is a "meat and potatoes" man has found all of the recipies quite tasty. Most dinner recipes make a meal for 4, sometimes 6, but they are easy to cut in half. I ordered another one of these books to give to my cousin and she is as pleased as I am! The strawberry-lime smoothie recipe is worth the purchase of the book alone! I am very, very pleased with my purchase! If you have decided to get on the right track and eat healthy, this is the book to buy!

Wonderful cookbook w/ great recipes

I love this cookbook. Me and my husband thought we would try this to lose weight and we have each lost 7 lbs in 3 week so far. I think the recipes are delicious and not very had to make. The ingrediants can get a bit expensive but once you have all the spices stocked up are fine. I have made quite a few of the recipes so far and loved everyone so far. I do not think we will ever go back to eating the way we did before. I am reading a lot of lables on food now. I plan to start exercising soon(which I dispise) but my husband loves to exercise and even does P90X but he had reached that wall and could lose no more weight. This new way of cooking and eating did the trick. I would recommend this cookbook for anyone who wants to lose weight. I have tried lost of my life to lose weight and nothing worked even exercise but this did the trick.

good

I guess I'm a rare vegetarian that doesn't like to eat Tempeh or Seitan and not much tofu. If you are like me then this may not be the perfect cookbook for you because there are LOTS of recipes focusing on these items. However, I just leave these items out and improvise. Some recipes have a lot of ingredients and are a little tedious but they turn out freaking amazing! MOUTH WATERING! Would recommend to add to your collection of veg cookbooks!

my favorite cookbook in the world

I adore this cookbook so much that I'm starting to buy copies as gifts for all of my friends. I have made so many recipes from the book, and they have almost all been excellent (I didn't really care for the beanballs). The other night I made Spicy Tempeh and Broccoli Rabe with Rotelle, and it got devoured by my entire family. I made lasagna using the cashew ricotta recipe, and it tasted like it was from a gourmet restaurant (even my non-veg father thought so). I find that her baking recipes are better than anything in other vegan cookbooks as well. I just need Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero, and I can be a content, well-fed vegan for years :)

Isa, will you marry me?

This is my vegan cooking bible. I am obsessed with the vegan caesar salad. My husband says that the pumpkin crumb cake is the greatest thing he ever ate. And the sushi! Who would think to put tempeh and veganaise in sushi? Isa, of course, because she's a genius. This book is a treasure, and a must for every vegan who loves to cook.

Editorial Review :

Thanks to processed and fast foods, being overworked, and feeling stressed while eating on the fly, it is increasingly difficult for most of us to eat anywhere near a balanced diet. We may not be obviously sick, but may suffer from lack of focus, insomnia, sluggishness, or any host of symptoms caused by nutritional deficiency. Green Smoothie Revolution takes aim at this silent epidemic by restoring balance to our diets.

Combining nutrition and know-how with recipes that pack a powerhouse punch, Victoria Boutenko reintroduces long neglected fruits, vegetables, and greens in the most persuasive style for our busy lives: with fast prep and delicious results. Featuring 200 recipes, Green Smoothie Revolution offers both simplicity (4 ripe pears, 1 bunch parsley, 2 cups water; blend well) and enough variety to keep taste buds happy and nutrients coming from a wealth of options.

Customer Review :

What a disappointment

First of all, I highly recommended the author's Green for Life - it is the definitive work on green smoothies. Oddly, this highly anticipated sequel is the same book, but with less information. Instead of expanding on the ideas in the first book, she simply cut all out all the background research on the importance of greens and added more recipes. If you really need hundreds of smoothie recipes, you may appreciate this book, but for most people, once you have a few recipes down you'll feel comfortable experimenting on your own. I have no idea why this book was written. But buy Green for Life - it's what this book tried to be and so much more.

Another great book from the Boutenko family

The Boutenkos know their stuff when it comes to raw food. The concept of the green smoothie is a great thing. I would never consume enough raw greens without the smoothie! Informative book.

A good place to start

I've had this book and a blend-tec blender for a month now and was worried when I first forked over the $$$ for the blender that I was making a huge mistake, but I was wrong. I got interested in green smoothies while researching ways to supplement our diet. We ate fairly well for standard Americans, but my son's health started to decline about a year after he entered preschool. I was looking for a way to get vitamins in him that he wouldn't fight me over and green smoothies have turned out to be the miracle for us.

At first we started out with just a few greens - to be sure we would stick with it. My son loved it but after a week or two, I noticed he didn't want it as much as at first. Then my husband told me that he felt like he needed more greens, so I added more and surprisingly my son sucked it down and asked for more. We still can't believe it. (He's 3).

So for real beginners, this is a great introduction. Without the guide, I just threw everything in the refrigerator in my first two smoothies and couldn't figure out why they were so horrible. Now we feel we are ready to start making more moves towards raw, which before seemed like an impossible dream. Yes, our health is beginning to improve, our energy is beginning to increase - and we know this is only the beginning.

Thank you Boutenkos!!

Green Smoothies YUM

In the past 2 years I have really gotten into the raw foods diet and although I do not practice it as much in the winter I still try to get in at least one raw meal a day (we live in VT and produce is not so great in the winter). Somedays this means just keeping it simple and having a green smoothie usually for breakfast, sometimes at lunch. The recipe book Green Smoothie Revolution by Victoria Boutenko has been a great resource for making some delicious green smoothies as well as providing a ton of information about green smoothies in sections such as The Importance of Rotating Greens in Your Smoothies and Food Combining in Green Smoothies.

The second part of this book features:

Tips and Tricks for Smoothie Preparatoin
Green Smoothies for Beginners
Supergreen Smoothies
Savory Green Smoothies and Soups
Green Smoothies for the Adventurous Souls
Green Puddings
Green Smoothies for children
Green Smoothies for Pets
Green Smoothies for Body Care
So far I have been mostly playing around with recipes from Green Smoothies for Beginners, Supergreen Smoothies and Green Smoothies for Children however I am interested in trying some green soups and puddings soon. The great part about this book is the variety of recipes there are, 200 to be precise, that are all fun and different. The recipes use a variety of greens to keep things interesting as well as a number of great fruit and veggie combinations. My favorites (so far) have been the Medallion Melon which is simple cantaloupe and romaine- simple and delicious. However, my absolute favorite and so far go to smoothie has been the Winter Green Smoothie which is berries, spinach, water and ginger- soooo good.

Over all this is a great book for those interested in raw foods, green smoothies and healthy new ways to get greens into ones diet.

Eye Opening Voice of Unfiltered Reason

Great book to get on audio. Chef Anthony Bourdain does well telling his own story, and through him insight into the cooking world. If you're fan of cooking shows (Bravo, the Food Channel, Fox) or interested in learning about what it takes to be a chef, this book offers one professional's insight into that world. His stories entertain, shock, and illuminate how difficult and complex being a line cook, much less a head chef.

Chef Bourdain acknowledges his checkered past, the ups and downs, drug usage, alcohol abuse, 17+ hour days, and the total commitment necessary to be successful. I understand now why shows like Top Chef and Hell's Kitchen are constructed. The career line cooks would cook circles around many of those contestants.

More important, Chef Bourdain shares what it takes to become a chef, whether taking a college track or apprenticeships, or a combination. A family member wants to be a chef. Now we have a way to develop a plan for building the foundation. Read this PG13 book, you'll enjoy the roller coaster ride.

A Fun Read

Very entertaining from beginning to end. If you like watching No Reservations and appreciate Anthony Bourdain's humor, you'll enjoy this book. It's a quick read and it'll make you chuckle throughout!

"Never judge a book by its cover"

I can recall standing at the best seller table in the center of Barnes & Noble holding a copy of "Kitchen Confidential" when it was first published. Not having been a fan of Anthony Bourdain, I quickly put the book down and went about my shopping. As time went by, I would frequently hear references and comments being made about "Kitchen Confidential." Having more of an open mind these days, I decided to read the book and see what all the fuss is about. "WOW!" I have a new-found respect for Anthony in many aspects and now am definitely a fan. Reading this book was like sitting down with a well-known, seasoned and well-respected chef listening to him reminisce about his career as a chef. I experienced multiple "foodgasms" and found myself devouring each page with voracity until the very last page was turned. Talk about dispelling any fantasies or notions of any kind of glamour in being a chef. Having worked in restaurants myself, I did know of some of the chaos and craziness Anthony Bourdain describes in the book, but "boy, oh, boy" did he open my eyes and teach me a few things. I can't wait to read everything he's written.

Rating :

food for thought

I am for sure late to the anthony bourdain party. Have watched his tv series off and on for years, never realizing that he was also an author. Pleasantly surprised, but not, all at the same time. He has his same sense of humor come through in is writing, and it is like he is narrating the book to you. As a relative newbie to cooking and to the foodie world, some terms were over my head, but it just inspires me to learn more.

Julia Child on acid....

This is the man who lets other men know that its OK to be in the kitchen actually creating somthing other than burgers and chicken for the family 4th of July Bar-B-Que..Which a lot of us burned the hell out of anyway because we were too busy talking, drinking beer and generally not giving notice to all the smoke and flames leaping out of the Weber....Anthony B. writes a book that tells us how he and his career came to be. It wasnt all pretty either. He entered the word of chefdom primed and ready for everything evil to put into his life and body. Sex and drugs and rock and roll all while making a lovely and delightful crab bisque for the couple at table 7.
Bordain DOES let you in on a few back room secrets that sometimes will make you wonder if you really do want to patronize an unknown eaterie..Bordain is just plain entertaining to watch and in this case, to read. Anyone that smokes at the dinner table can't be all bad...

Everything needed to brew beer right the first time. Presented in a light-hearted style without frivolous interruptions, this authoritative text introduces brewing in a easy step-by-step review.

Customer Review :

Great Info

I thought the book read good. A lot of great info that's organized well. I've got all my stuff and I'm getting ready to start my first brew here soon. Between this book, brewing for dummies, and the internet, I should be good to go. I'd recommend this book.

Rating :

Fantastic book!

The book was recommended by many people and I can see why. It's great for anyone starting out brewing or for someone who is trying to make the next step to partial mash or all grain. There is a wealth of technical knowledge as well as the get down to it to make beer kind of knowledge. It was recommended to me and I'll recommend it to you! You won't be disappointed!

Rating :

A Must Have...

This book is a must have for any brewer. Even after reading the book cover to cover, twice, I still use this book as a research tool.

Rating :

This is the Bible

The problem with beer brewing books is that their relatively limited audience means that revised editions are few and far between. Therefore, most books (e.g. The Complete Joy of Homebrewing) are seriously out of date. Palmer's book is a classic and is relatively new. He has organized the chapters perfectly--separate step by step "how-to's" for both extract and all-grain brewing that are augmented by more detailed and scientific discussions of the brewing process and the chemistry. If you're a newbie, you must have this book. If you are ready to jump to all-grain, you must have this book. If you like reading about beer, you must have this book. If you are highly advanced and have visions of starting your own brewery, you probably already have this book and have dog-eared the you-know-what out of it.

Highest recommendation--I wish there was a Winemaking counterpart.

Rating :

Buy this book today, brew a beer tomorrow

You literally could brew your first beer within a day of having this book in your hand. It is well thought out in terms of layout and material presentation. It gives you the basics, a list of "do this, then this" instructions, and then tells you why you are doing it. The level of technical detail increases in each section and is easy to comprehend.

There is information here that can guide a pure novice though your first beer, and info that will help experienced all grain brewers as well.

If you were going to buy one book to learn how to brew at home, then this is that book. You will (I did) make a good beer your first try (better than most commercial beers), and if you use this book as a reference every beer you make will be better.

If you have any interest at all in home brewing, regardless of your experience level, you will learn somehting from this book.

Questions & Answers
Question : Does anyone have a suggestion on what model and brand of home coffee roaster I should purchase?
I want to buy a coffee roaster for my husband for his birthday. The problem is that I have no idea what one to get. He is REALLY into his coffee being freshly roasted and has a friend who roasts his own and just loves it. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it. My husband is a wonderful, hardworking man who deserves a special gift.

Answer:
I've been roasting for years.I started with the Fresh Roast 8http://www.sweetmarias.com/prod.freshroast.phpIt is great for a first-time roaster, but it can't do large nough amounts for someone who drinks a lot of coffee. Mine lasted for about 4 years with plenty of use.For larger amounts try the Gene Cafehttp://www.sweetmarias.com/prod.genecafe.phpIt will let him do plenty of roasting and gives plenty of control. My current method is actually the cheapest, but I actually enjoy the hands-on of it. I now use a heat gun.http://www.homeroaster.com/heatgun.htmlhttp://www.ineedcoffee.com/04/heatgun/http://www.instruct ables.com/id/SZ2TY3EF3GAG1LS/This you have to do outside as there is a lot of smoke & chaf gets everywhere, but I love it. My method is a little different than what's described. I bought a strainer that fits the rim of a steel bowl perfectly. It allows the hot air to circulate better. I can roast a weeks worth of coffee in about 20-30 minutes.Update: Yeah, VC, I get almost all my green from them.

Question : Where can I buy a home coffee roaster in Chicago, not online. Target only sells them online.?

Answer:
The gOdiva people make a good machine and all you have to do uis subscribe to their coffee and then cancel it

Question : How do you become a master coffee Roaster?
Is there a school or what

Answer:
Your best option would be to start on the ground floor with one of the best new independent coffee roasters in the industry (like stumptown, intelligentsia, and others) and learn from them, as apprentice so-to-say. There is a tremendous amount to learn, not just about roasting , but about the coffee itself. You've really got to understand the bean in order to bring out the right characteristics during the roast. Tom at Sweet Marias is an excellent source of information for the home roaster so feel free to ask him, and others in the industry, for advice.
