Lello Ariete Burr Coffee Grinder

Customer Review :

3.5 years of service

I purchased this in July of 2006. It has worked well for three and a half years. In that time we've made about 1400 to 1500, 10 cup pots of coffee. It is very loud and has a high frequency component to the sound that can be very penetrating. Plan to leave the room. I have tools in my wood shop that are more quiet. Grind is pretty consistent. It has a wide range of grinds but doesn't get as fine as I would like for espresso. I've used it almost exclusively for drip grind which is does quite well. As with many plastic-bodied units, it can develop a static charge while grinding which can result in quite a mess when you pour the ground coffee out.

Just recently we had a problem with the cutters shifting and I'm afraid the unit is at the end of it's life. I made a temporary fix but I'm looking for a replacement. My investment ended up being about 3 cents per 10 cup pot which I think is very fair. Because of that, I would rate it a good investment for the price.

Coffee technology is addictive. My previous grinder was a blade unit that sold for about half the price of this one. My next grinder will be quieter and be more facile at finer grinds, but I expect to pay at least twice as much as this one for the new unit. This really is a nice grinder for people early in their coffee addiction. It did what we asked it to do and held up for a reasonable period of time.

Stand By!

I am currently in the market for a new grinder. I purchased this one, after much research. I thought I was getting a good product, but I am not at all happy with it. I've had it for about 4 years, but it hasn't worked right for most of that time. You have to stand with it, holding the dispense cup tightly to the machine, so that it operates. The bottom of the dispense cup came apart a while ago, so I had to tape it back together. I would never recommend this piece to anyone. I paid $90 for it, through Amazon, and now look how cheaply they're selling it! I shouldn't have had to stand next to the machine, holding the catch compartment tightly to the machine. Ridiculous!

I regret buying this $50 coffee grinder

This $50.00 coffee grinder clogs up where the grounds come out. The plastic ground coffee receptacle is difficult to use because the top is not connected, so the top falls into the container, it falls off, etc. It is too high maintenance for my taste. I never used a burr grinder before and will never use one again. I bought this for our office use and want to return it for one that just grinds the coffee.

Great grinder

We've been using this grinder for a year now. Daily, sometimes 2-3 times daily. It continues to perform well. Yes, it's loud - it's a grinder. Setting the grind coarseness is easy. Clean up is easy. We are very pleased with this product.

Awesome Lello Ariete Burr Coffee Grinder

This product is awesome. From the variable grinding options that run a full spectrum (very coarse to fine) to the selection of exactly how many cups one wishes to make. I've never had a fresher cup of coffee (FYI I use a french press;I grind exactly 2 cups and it's perfect every time. Love this product.

Not great...

I didn't care for this grinder. It creates a ton of static when it's grinding so that the grounds stick to the cup, the grinder, your hands, everything, and make mess. It's also a bit of a pain to have to make sure the lid is completely locked before grinding... if you get a bit of grounds in the locking area, it gets very finicky. It also won't grind the beans evenly. I get beans crushed to powder and nearly whole in the same cup.

Broken in the box!

This grinder didn't get great reviews anyway....but the one I received was poor construction and fell apart in the box it was shipped in! Of course Amazon was great about the return & refund, but what a disappointment!

Great coffee grinder

This is a great coffee grinder. It does an excellent job grinding beans for both my drip coffee machine and my espresso machine - other machines I've tried do not grind the beans fine enough for the espresso machine.

I also love that I can turn it on, leave it and it turns itself off automatically and the cord stowage feature is so useful.

Great coffee/seed grinder

We bought this when our old Krupps started making loud bearing noises.
I really like it. The auto turn off is wonderful. No more holding my finger on the start button.
The cord winder in the base is a great idea. No more tangled power cords.
It is very easy to use. We like strong coffee, so I grind it very fine.
If you did put 12 or more coffee measures in this I think it would overflow, that is the reason I didn't give it 5 stars.
I make 8 cups and it is pretty full after it grinds.
I am going to buy the new Hamilton Beach grinder to grind flax seeds.
I don't think that this model is sold any more, but the new model looks similar.

Defective and returned

The packaging from the manufacturer was inadequate to protect the product and it arrived broken. When returned, Amazon had no others in stock for replacement. So, we ordered a Virtuoso by Baratza -- it is FAR superior to the La Pavoni because it has all the same features but is sturdy yet sleek in design, quiet when operating, and has virtually NO coffee dust when grinding. We are thrilled the La Pavoni was broken and we were forced to look elsewhere. Save yourself problems and mess, get the Virtuoso.

Questions & Answers
Question : what is the best brand of coffee grinder. also electric vs. hand grinder? why?
also where is a site showing how to sharpen knives pref. with added video. can a bread knife be sharpened. (put in 2 questions because down on pts. they say) thanks.

Answer:
I have a Cuisinart electric grinder (the only way to go is electric). I've had mine for over 10 years and no problem. I also have another that I use just for grinding spices...Regarding your serrated knife-if it did not cost alot of money and is not high quality, better to just toss it and buy a new one. If it is high quality, you will want a pro to sharpen it--but it's not gonna be cheap--they are labor intensive to sharpen.

Question : What is best - Electric or manual turning coffee grinder.?
How is ground coffee granule size determined. Does it matter.

Answer:
I LIKE MY ELECTRIC GRINDER...ITS QUICK,THOROUGH AND UNIFORM

Question : How do you clean a spice/coffee grinder?
I have this electric spice grinder and i want to grind sesame seeds in it. I have used it for coffee beans before. So, how do I clean it properly so that i am not mixing sesame seeds with coffee beans?

Answer:
Tear up a piece of bread and run it in the grinder. It's like a sponge and will clean things up nicely. I use it all the time.

Question : Can you grind other things besides meat in a meat grinder?
we are looking for a heavy duty grinder for food. we need a grinder to grind up roots into powder, and we don't think that a coffee grinder will do the job.can we put things besides meat in a meat grinder?if not, what would you suggest grinding roots in?we are looking for an electric grinder.thank you.

Answer:
You can grind anything in there. Just make sure to wash it thoroughly after each use. I actually put raw cranberries in mine to make cranberry salad. So yeah, pretty much anything will grind up in there. But it will not grind it powder-fine. You will likely need to process it again in a food processor or coffee grinder to get it into a powder.

Question : Looking for info. on a Coffee Mill / Grinder
I found an old vintage electric coffee mill made by Cincinnati Time Recorder Co. It weighs about 65 lbs. and is in good shape. Plugged it in and the motor runs smoothly too.I could not see letting it get tossed in a landfill. But I can not find any info on this particular grinder. The company mostly made time clocks dating back to 1896. And I think they made kitchen items up till the mid 1940's.Would like to determine if it is worthless or an item that someone would collect? It is a model #225 if that helps anyone.

Answer:
put it on e-bay if you don't find someone here how wants it maybe someone will want it

Question : How long should I grind coffee for?
Good Morning! I finally decided to try whole bean coffee instead of ground coffee! Two quick questions:1. Does whole bean coffee really have more flavor than ground coffee?and2. For how long should I grind the coffee for? I have one of those small personal sized electric grinders. The directions with the grinder said 20 seconds, but I just wanted to verify on that with other coffee drinkers! Thanks!Randy

Answer:
Whole beans from those clear dispensers @ the grocery store are not much better than pre-ground coffee. Beans in valve-sealed bags are as fresh as you can get without buying right from the roaster or roasting your own.Blade grinders aren't great for coffee as they pulverized (not grind) the beans, but you can use them for most drip brewers pretty well. 20 seconds is a good starting point, you'll be able to judge your preference after a few tries.Don't go 20 seconds straight. Blades create heat which damages the bean's flavor. Go in 3-5 second bursts, that will also let you look between bursts to see how the grind looks.
