great little machine, great value
I bought this machine after looking at the not-so-good reviews of machines several times more expensive. This was a good decision, it is an awesome value for the price. It performs as advertised and makes great latte and capuccino. It does not have the automatic features of the more expensive machines, but for use maybe twice a day it does not really need it. The fact that it also makes regular coffee is a nice bonus. The only little problem is that if you make more than 3 shots of espresso, you will run out of useful steam for steaming/frothing. Besides that, it is a great machine at an unbeatable price for casual espresso-lovers. I would definitely buy it again.

Great value for the money
Before I bought this coffee maker, I read most of the reviews and I was slightly concerned with some of them. One said that they send the product back because the "pot dripped" when pouring coffee. Another one: The coffee is nor hot enough. And another one: The machine smells plastic. Well, they were all correct! The pot drips if you don't lift the lid. So, if you simply don't want to lift the lid and have 100 additional dollars available to avoid that pain then, go ahead, send the machine back... The coffee comes out at the same temperature as a coffee percolator which is far too low so... but hold on... IT IS A PERCOLATOR! And finally, it does smells plastic the first couple of times that it is used (the machine, not the coffee). Seriously, The only reason why I am not giving 5 stars is because there is not an automatic power off feature available and I tend to forget to turn the thing off. But, besides that, it's the best value that your money can buy.

Convenient Appliance
The ECM21 is a great, convenient unit. The removable fill container is nice in that it can be easily cleaned unlike other coffee makers. I like the 1-4 cup brew option which delivers fuller flavor coffee if used when brewing more servings (takes longer). The milk steamer has adequate pressure and is consistent time after time. One drawback to this unit- why I give it a 4 is the carafe spills very easily if one pours too quickly.

adequate... far from stellar
This is functional, but like most items that perform multiple tasks it does not seem to do any one well. Ours was receives with a broken hinge on the lid that after dealing with the particular seller for over a month for delivery we just did not feel it was worth exchanging.
Gripes: We have to hold the lid of the caraf open to pour or coffee ends up on the counter more than in the cup. frother positioning... would be great for a leftie.
Wanted features: timer as mentioned, and available in higer level purchases.
This make good coffee and espresso, but I feel it will be a temporary item in my kitchen.

Customer Review :
It's great so far
Just got this yesterday, so these are initial impressions. So far I'm very happy with this though. After just a few tries I've got pretty good espresso coming out, using a bean that probably isn't ideal. The frother seems plenty powerful too - it took about 150 seconds to steam 8-10 oz of milk, but it only takes about 45 seconds to steam 2-3 oz of milk right in the cappuccino cup, as they show in the instructional video.
I will agree with another poster that the frother doesn't seem ideal for producing micro-foam, although I read at CoffeeGeek that it can be done with some practice. It satisfies me at this point though, and I'd be willing to work with it to see what more it can do.
The ease of use is the best part. I've had the traditional burr grinder/semi-automatic machine combination, and it was just too much work to be worth using as much as I'd like. This reduces an espresso to a few button pushes, and a cappuccino to not much more. Cleanup is great too - a wipedown of the frother, run some water through the frother, and let the machine rinse itself out. Now the problem will be not drinking espresso all the time.
Durability is my only potential concern, but from what I've been able to find out on the web, this brand should be about as good as I can get in the home market. Hopefully it lives up to that.
I didn't give 5 stars only because it's a bit noisier than I'd like. The grinder is pretty quiet, but the pump is louder than other machines I've used. It's hardly a problem, but if that sort of thing matters to you, it's there. For me, I'm very happy with the machine so far and expect to be for quite a while.

terrible sale
I would recommend that Amazon cancel this seller's right to sell via Amazon.
We paid for the product and thus filled our part of the deal, but never did receive our product. Emails and even phone calls were systematically ignored. We did finally get a response from the seller stating that he would refund our money that very day, yet that too was an empty promise. We finally had to take a legal approach.
They may be great individuals - but they have no business selling products on the web.

Weak Coffee
Nice looking machine but after two years of trying every kind of coffee and setting, we have come to the conclusion that this machine just makes very weak coffee period. We're finally dumping it. Since Williams and sonoma also deleted this line from their sales, I guess we are not the only ones that had problems with its performance

too expensive to maintain
I have been using the Jura Capresso for the past 3 years. The coffee has decent crema, but I am not happy with it's inability to make a very strong espresso. Setting the cup size is supposed to accomplish this, but the cup size is variable even when a single setting is maintained. My bigest gripe is that 2 years ago the machine malfunctioned and again this year. There is a flat fee of $275 to fix it including mailing (find your own box) which I find extremely excessive for a delicate machine that seems to break down every 2 years. The customer service person did confirm that this happens to a number of customers, but it is not excessive in the company's point of view. Also the turn around time to fix the machine is 3 weeks. I will switch to another product the next time it breaks down.

Step up to the Coffee Bar
The Impressa E9 is a nice system. I have owned one for a year and a half and have reached the 1000 cup mark. I am confident to say this is a fine machine. Every cup is consistent as long as you use a water filter, adjust the grind properly to suit your beans, and keep the machine clean. Even the scoop feature makes a a nice cup from ground coffee.
The Espresso tastes wonderful when the Impressa is on a Robust setting. A regular cup of coffee tastes just right on the Standard setting. Making a latte or a cappuccino is no longer a coveted Barista secret. This machine makes it fun and easy to try different styles. The frothing worked best with 2% milk and some patience, but came out beautifully. Make sure you clean the stem immediately after use.
This machine is very easy to clean. The drawer pulls out to expose the water pan and waste bin. It also reminds you to clean, rinse, or descale if you are forgetful. I like owning this machine best when I have guests. It is quick and easy to make each guest a perfectly, hot cup...any way they like it.
CONS - I would like to have a larger reservoir, but I am sure it would not compliment the design. The top of the machine looks like a cup warmer; although it does become warm during operation, it is NOT a cup warmer.

Disappointed
Well, I bought this coffee maker around 3 years ago and I got some good use out of it but it just stopped working a couple of months ago. I also agree that the machine feels cheep and I guess it proved cheap since it stopped working. I never had a coffee maker just die on me and I am disappointed that I only got 3 years out of it.

good coffee, bad espresso
After a year of using this we put it in the garage for the next yard sale. I didn't have a problem with the coffee, but my husband thought the espresso part was terrible. Here's our list of pros and cons: Pros: 1. smaller and shorter so it fit easily under cabinet - however - see cons for part two of this one 2. simple and easy to use, very basic 3. good, basic coffee Cons: 1. NO AUTO-OFF ON THE COFFEE MAKER. This is a biggie if you leave it on at least 3 times a week like I did. 2. Espresso was bad. started tasting weak and being unpredictable in it's delivery after several months. tried cleaning it but nothing worked. 3. water door at back is large and you really have to pull this machine out from under the cabinet to fill it. but the unit is really bulky to be pulling out every morning. plus the little rubber feet on the bottom popped off instantaneously.
Hope this helps. Not a terrible machine in my opinion, especially for the price. You do get what you pay for. But also not terrific.

Piece of junk!
I would not recommend this machine. It's plastic and bulky and pretty much cheap looking. The milk frothing "wand" is short and akward to use. As soon as it hits the milk, it's a foam explosion and makes a big mess. To top it off, the espresso isn't even hot. I haven't bothered to try out the coffee side, as I'm perfectly happy with my no fuss french press. Don't waste your money on this item!

It Krupped out!
We have only had this pot a few years, only used filtered water in it, and vinegar cleaned it regularly. The flow slowly started to diminish. We troubleshooted the machine and found a faulty heating element. Of course there is poor customer service. Krups used to be a quality product. Our "spare" $20 Mr. Coffee pot is much older than the Krups and is back in service. I will seek another espresso machine, but it will NOT be a Krups.

Do Not Buy This Machine
I was given this as a gift and sadly had to look the gift-horse in the mouth. My boyfriend returned it and got his money back.
This is a sub-par product that is poorly manufactured and almost 100% plastic.
The coffee maker did not even work, it did nothing when we tried to make a pot of coffee, and the espresso it created was simply "strong coffee".
I have been a barista and am knowledgeable about how to make a proper espresso. This machine is not capable of that.
Use your money towards a better product - research a good pump driven machine.
Or simply purchase the $40 Mr. Coffee - tho its not the quite the same, it will produce something closer to espresso than this machine ever could.

So Useful!
I'm very impressed by this machine! it has everything and for such a small amount of money. I can make espresso for my wife and a normal coffee for me at the same time, and I can even choose the strength of my coffee! Genious!

COFFEE MAKER LEAKS
I purchased this February of 2008, after 1 month it started leaking, I thought it was condensation, my counter top and floor in that area are ruined. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. I'm disappointed because it makes really good coffee and cappuccino. Waste of money.

leaky and lame
I got this model for our home and have had nothing but trouble ever since! Let's just say this: when I purchased this coffee maker/espresso maker, I didn't expect to fight my way through the immense and continuous LAKE that formed underneath the machine every time I made a pot of brew! I happen to be one of those people that finds waking up and getting possibly electrocuted before breakfast just a bit too much for my liking, thank you very much! The leak lake stops here.
Rating :
It's designed to "leak"
My machine "leaks" as well, however since I move it forward on the counter to put the water tank in, I have seen the water when I slide it back and not been unknowingly wetting my counter like others. I searched "delonghi bco-120t leaking" and I got this product page. I read 3 pages of reviews and then inspected the unit closely. It is designed to drain water from the compartment where the tank goes through a hole in the corner. I personally think the design should NOT have included a hole. That would allow you to use the tank as a convenience for easy filling, but ALSO allow you to just fill the compartment up in the event you prefer to, or crack/lose etc... the tank. I tried a few test brews of just water and have found the most likely reason for water getting to that drain hole is "user error." The tank needs to fit into the bottom quickly and tightly. If it is lightly pressed down, it might leak out into the compartment, and consequently out the drain hole onto the counter. Just push it down nice and tightly and hopefully you'll be ok.
The carafe does seem thinner and broke after dropping a fork into a full of water carafe in the sink. $27 to replace from gourmet dot com I think.

Questions & Answers
Question : espresso machine?
im going to buy my first espresso machine.are there certain features i shouldnt go without with a new espresso machine purchase?i want a lower end one for affordability reasons....but i still want a decent one.Suggestions?
Answer:
Having owned more than one, I'm happy to share my opinions with you--my current model, a Hamilton Beach that was highly regarded by Consumer Reports, is pathetic! Also, maybe you want a little guidance on how to make the best espresso with whatever machine you buy?So let's talk in general terms--I agree that you want a pump-driven machine, at least 15 psi. Another thing I've observed is that the filter screen and the tamper are important.Get a model with a deep filter screen--my Hamilton Beach has one that's very shallow, and I'm convinced that the steam doesn't stay in contact with the grounds long enough to accumulate flavor. Now, there will come with the machine a tamper, a little plastic thing that you use to pack the grounds into the filter screen--if the tamper is much smaller than the filter screen (like my HB) then it's difficult to pack the grounds properly. Also, they come with the little steam vent for frothing milk to make capuccino--some of the vents have a special tip that incorporates air automatically, others are just plain pointed steel tubing. The air-injector models make it easier. If you're going to be steaming milk, know that skim works best, and get one of those stainless steel pitchers so you can feel the temperature of the milk through the bottom--when it's very hot but not too hot to touch, the frothing is completed. To make really good espresso, you need the best beans. Try to find beans that have been roasted super-dark (of course) but that have an oily sheen on their surface--some places burn the beans and dry them out (Starbucks); the oils in the beans are essential to flavor and also to the creation of that smooth brown "crema" that floats atop the best espresso.Of course, the very best way is to buy whole beans, keep them cool and dry, and grind them just before use. I have a Braun grinder that adjusts to a very fine espresso grind, it works well. And you need to learn to pack the grounds tightly; most good baristas will try to put 35 pounds of pressure on the grounds, and they practice using a bathroom scale.

Question : I have an espresso machine I never use. Are there any alternative uses for an espresso machine?
I do not drink coffee and don't want recipes for using espresso in any way, shape, or form. Surely there has to be some cool use for an espresso machine besides making espresso or hot water? I can make hot water for oatmeal or tea in the micro. If I'm going to keep this machine around, it needs to fulfill a purpose. Is there, perhaps, some practical use for its parts?

Question : How much coffee ground for an espresso machine do I use in a drip machine?
I bought some coffee that was pre-ground to a fine texture for espresso machines. How much should I use for my drip machine? Half of what I would use with a coarser grind?
Answer:
I would say temper it to your taste, but definitely use less. because the coffee is ground finer there is more surface area exposed to the water so more flavor is extracted from the coffee. depending on the coffee and your personal taste this can be a good or bad thing. it most likely will make your coffee taste bitter since the grinds are in contact with water for a longer time than if you were brewing it with an espresso maker. I would either get a stove top espresso maker (relatively cheap) or junk that coffee and get something ground for your type of machine. Ideally, you will get your best cup of coffee if you buy whole beans and get a grinder and grind just what you need right before you brew it.

Question : Is it okay to fill an espresso machine with milk instead of water?
If I fill the water compartment of my espresso machine with milk instead of water will it clog/ruin the machine? I'm not talking about the frother, which is used to frothe milk. I'm talking about the water compartment that you put water in, which makes steam, which makes espresso. Anyone who's ever owned an espresso machine will know what I'm talking about. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!has anyone actually done it?
Answer:
That'll boil your milk, I mean scald it.Yuck! Why??

Question : What is a good, somewhat inexpensive espresso machine?
I am considering buying an espresso machine for my dorm room next year, yes my dorm room. My college's coffee shop is disgusting. They use pre-ground Folgers for the espresso, among many other things. I've been a barista for two years and know the difference between a really good latte and one that tastes like mud, so quality is important to me.What is a good, relatively inexpensive (less than $300) espresso machine with a steaming wand that I could buy?
Answer:
There are a few really inexpensive (under $100) espresso machines that use pump . They all have some pros and cons - you can read about that here:http://www.espresso-machines-and-coffee-makers.com/inexpensive-espresso-machines.htmlWith your budget, I would recommend that you get one of the lower end Gaggia machine. Gaggia Carezza is a good starter espresso machine and you can get it for around $200:http://www.espresso-machines-and-coffee-makers.com/gaggia-carezza.htmlFinally, do not forget that you will need a good burr grinder. Without a good grinder you cannot really make good espresso. Since the burr grinders are quite expensive, I think that the best options for you is either a good manual grinder (like Zassenhaus) or Breville Ikon or Capresso Infinity:http://www.espresso-machines-and-coffee-makers.com/capresso-infinity-burr-grinder.htmlHope this helps.

Question : How do I start my Breville espresso machine?
I just got a Breville espresso machine for my birthday and I don't know how to start it. I cleaned it, I put in fresh cold water in the water tank and when I turned on the machine I waited for the heating light to turn off. When the heating light was off I switched the machine from standby to espresso and all I got was a loud noise but no water coming out. Can anyone help?
Answer:
Does it have a detachable water tank?if it does this is probably where the problem lies, you have an air bubble between the water tank and the brewing components. jiggle the tank a bit to make sure the connection is secure and try again. the noise shoud go away. If it doesn't or your machine doesn't have a detachable tank call breville's customer service line- it is a fairly common problem with new machines.

Question : Why does a home espresso machine cost as much as a computer?
Even when the body is made out of plastic they are still hundreds of dollars. The components of the machine can't be that expensive. Is there some snobbery factor involved in the pricing since before Starbucks, "everyday people" weren't drinking much espresso.
Answer:
I suppose that would depend on the type of computer you're pricing :-) Some automated home espresso machines cost upwards of $2000. Some reasons why an automated machine would cost so much include:- Construction quality (many heavy duty fabricated components)- Integrated electrics / electronics (an "automated" machine must regulate water temperature and pressure, provide a consistent grind, have durable components, be self cleaning, etc.)- Custom manufactured components (water boilers, pumps, regulators, valves, group heads, etc. are custom manufactured for each machine model, of which few are sold)- Long life (I've owned a $200 Krups machine for 10 years - I would expect a more expensive machine to last for decades, if well maintained)For $200 to $400 you should be able to find a good pump espresso maker (minimum 1200 watts, 15 bars pressure) that will last for years, make consistently good espresso, and be aesthetically appealing). Make sure to complement your purchase with a good burr grinder (about $100).
|
Question : How do you clean an espresso machine?
We have a Krups espresso machine, and we have read the manual and cleaned it out with vinegar like it said, but the flavor is still not the same as it was brand new. We use it everyday, so I was wondering if there is something we could do to get the old coffee smell/flavor out of the machine?
Answer:
I am only familiar with big hotel machine and my own cheap Mr. coffee pot. I run espresso grind through it.Make sure the area above the grounds is clean. May need a brush. If a full run with water at the end of the day doesn't do it; you may want to ad water mixed with one or two teaspoons of baking soda per litter. Sweetens up my pot.

Question : How can I use a 220V Lever Espresso Machine in the US?
I have a 220V pull lever espresso machine from italy. The lever machines have a heating element but no pump so there is no motor involved and no cycles to worry about. What would be the easiest way to use this machine. Should I just get a step up transformer?
Answer:
Residential voltage in the US is 240 volts. The machine would run hot. The best thing to so would be to get a buck-boost transformer to reduce the voltage. Otherwise you could try it and see how long it lasts.
