No regrets, but needs improvement
My wife has figured out how to make it do everything, so no regrets.
But, as someone else pointed out, extra care needs to be taken when pouring from the carafe. In the first week I spilled coffee 3 times. Never had a problem w/ the old Mr. Coffee.
Also, this unit takes at least 3x the amount of time to make the same amount of coffee as the old Mr. C.

Great Price for a Good Machine
Over all we are pleased with this coffee maker. The pot does spill coffee when pouring... we are trying our best to pour slowly into the cup, but still encounter spillage. To be honest, we've yet to own a coffee pot that does not have spillage when pouring. Not the worst thing, yet it sure would be nice to have a clean pour. Really like that the coffee side water reservoir can be removed for cleaning. The machine makes good coffee and espresso drinks. The machine does not come with an espresso tamper, so you have to purchase one. Glad we found this value for money machine!

Good Coffee
I got this a while ago. It performed well for when I had it and I would of loved to keep it. For X-Mas someone gave us a Kitchenaid coffee maker so we replaced it, but for the time we had it it performed very well.

This was exactly what we were looking for in one machine! It's very easy to use and the espresso and coffe taste great.

LOVE IT!!
I love this appliance!! When I was shopping around, I had read some negative things about this coffee maker. But I took a "risk" and got one anyway. I'm so glad I did!
After owning mine for a couple days now, I've figured out how to use it and really enjoy the espresso and frothing abilities. Each one I make is better than the last, and I can see once I get all my ingredients just right, it'll taste just like the ones from my favorite coffee shop.
It will quickly pay for itself!
I do recommend spending the extra couple bucks for the thermometer and a good, stainless steel frothing pitcher, these two items will really help with making your capps or lattes.
The only downfall, and this is just a fact of life, train yourself to properly clean the machine after each use. This will save you flavor and heartache down the road.
And don't forget, if you don't have the time to make a fancy drink, it will still brew your coffee in a couple minutes!!!
A GREAT BUY!!!! It's like you're paying for the coffee maker, and get a built in frother and espresso maker for free!!!

Krups XP1500 Warning
I bought this machine less than 6 months ago and descaled it monthly. The coffee maker part has a huge clog. The water just sits in the chamber, and of course the product manual has no instructions for unclogging the water chamber. It's a big disappointment, and based on other user's experience with Krups customer service, I'm not going to waste my time with them. This was a complete waste of money.

Done with this
We received this coffee maker from our wedding registry 3 years ago. I wish we'd done more research before picking it. The covers for the on lights broke off a long time ago, the heating plate is irreparably charred no matter how much I try to clean it, and it has never produced a very hot cup of coffee. The final straw is that its now exploding grounds out the side of the machine every other day despite all my attempts to clean, adjust, change the thickness of the grounds, etc. I have to keep dismantling the whole filter assembly to try and clean it out then attempt to wedge the cheap plastic parts back together. It seems obvious to me now that an all plastic machine simply isn't going to hold up to long term daily use. The replacement is on the way.

Not really an espresso machine
If you don't know what you're doing, and want to make an espresso-like or cappuccino-like beverage for yourself, this will probably do the trick for you. If you have experience, or plan to make drinks for more than one person, save up for a better machine. As a former barista, I was disappointed with the "cappuccino" side of this machine. It does not make real layered espresso, just a stronger type of coffee, despite what some other reviewers mentioned about "crema". (Side note - if you can let your espresso sit for more than 10 seconds without the layers re-blending and resulting in a bitter taste, it's not real espresso.) The steam wand leaves much to be desired, although removing the froth aid (the removable black sleeve) does improve things drastically, as the froth aid creates GIANT bubbles, nearly triples the volume of milk, and heats unevenly, if at all. Still, it was awkward to maneuver a steaming pitcher (NOT INCLUDED) in the limited space between the counter & the machine, and I still only get a thin separated layer of foam on the top with the steam wand itself, adequate for a latte, not for cappuccino. This is a single boiler/dual use unit, so you cannot steam milk and pull pretend-espresso at the same time, which was annoying for me being accustomed to a dual boiler machine that allowed me to time everything perfectly, although because the espresso is really just coffee, it didn't matter as much. Plus, you can only steam enough milk for one, MAYBE two drinks at a time, and you can only pull 4 "shots of espresso" (which makes 4 weak drinks or 2 strong drinks), then you have to clean out the machine and start over, so don't expect to make espresso beverages for a whole party of people. It will take you a VERY long time, it takes about 5 minutes to make one drink (or two if you're lucky) start to finish, not counting clean up. No espresso tools are included, so be prepared if you want to make a "cappuccino" right out of the box, buy your steaming pitcher & thermometer (if you use one) before you plan to make your first drink. You might also want to consider getting a knock box, because even though you're not making real espresso, you will end up with a puck in your portafilter that is a pain & a mess to get out otherwise. All in all, I wouldn't really recommend this machine to anyone who wants real espresso beverages. And if all you really want is coffee, spend less money on a plain old coffee machine. You can even buy an inexpensive stand-alone milk steamer, and use your coffee machine to make stronger coffee, and you'll get better results than this machine. Thumbs down.

Great machine for the $$$$$
I was a little hesitant to buy this machine based on some negative reviews about broken handles and the machine being cheaply made. Glad I decided to take a chance,I love the XP1500, it makes great espresso and coffee, shipping was FAST, the price speaks for itself.

Not a good idea
My new combo arrived just a week after I ordered it. As I pulled it out of the box, I discovered the glass coffee pot was broken. I called customer service the next morning and they said they would send a replacement pot. (I never received a confirmation about that.) So no coffee right away but I still had the espresso machine. It was no problem to make a nice strong cup of espresso. My only complaint was that the filter basket had a small circumference so I couldn't use the new tamper I bought to go with the machine. The second day I used the machine, the plastic handle broke off in my hand when I connected the filter basket to the machine. So now the coffee side could not be used and the espresso side needed pliers in order to use it. I called the company again and they offered a replacement machine but I would rather get a partial refund. I will go back to my 20 year old model since it is better made and I'll live with its quirks while I renew my research.

Warning: If anything goes wrong, the warranty is worthless!
Although their coffeemakers do an excellent job of making coffee, DeLonghi WILL USE ANY EXCUSE NOT TO HONOR THE WARRANTY IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG! Here's my experience: When I ordered my coffeemaker from DeLonghi, it was "backordered" and took over a month to ship. A little over 10 months after I received it, the coffeemaker broke! (The heater coil went out and it would no longer make coffee.) Since it had been over a year since I ORDERED it, they said the one-year warranty was expired, despite the fact I had proof I had received it less than a year before (I still had the shipping confirmation). I explained this numerous times. For a couple of months, the various people I talked to kept telling me they would "look into it", but they never called back. Finally, when it actually WAS over a year since I had received the coffeemaker, when I called to check on the status of my warranty claim, they said, "Your warranty has expired. You've had this coffeemaker over one year. There is nothing we can do." I highly recommend you find a coffeemaker from a manufacturer that stands behind their product! I have a Cuisinart now, and it is WONDERFUL!

not good
After opening this product I found some of the pieces were missing,so I contacted the seller and maker to get the parts. After 6 weeks I finally get the parts and was able to start using the machine, this was a christmas gift that I had given. After waiting for parts to arrive I found the machine did not work good at all.We tried it several times and we ended up with more coffee on the outside of the machine than in the cup. That was 2 years ago and the machine has been sitting on the shelf since. We took our 15 year old espresso make back off the shelf and have been using it since.

It's great when it works
We had Delonghi BCO264B combination for over a year. Last week, once of a sudden, the drip coffee part simply stopped working. No warning, no signs..
However, when it worked it was good. We're looking for a different combination machine now, but it most probably won't be another DeLonghi product.

Delonghi BCO264B Combo Coffee Maker -- A Great Product
Bought as a Christmas gift for my wife. It was very easy to set up and use, although we're still playing with the settings. I particularly like the ability to set the time that the pot stays hot -- it's preset at 2 hours, but can be easily changed to any length, including always on. The titanium filter is a nice idea -- does away with paper filters, and it cleans easily.

Dont waste your money! Breaks or stops working in a month or so
I went through a few of these within a month of owning it. I received it damaged got a replacement and that one lasted less than a month then another and another and finally one worked for almost a year and that one broke too. You have to ship the unit at your expense every time as well and at 20+ pounds its expensive to ship and my closest place was a 2 hour drive.
it doesnt make quality espresso at all its more like coffee even with premium beans that are ground just before brewing.
Their customer service is useless as well they dont know anything about their units or making espresso.
spend a couple hundred more and purchase a higher quality one that will last.

Great Coffee, poor manufacturing
Coffee tastes great, however the machine did start leaking. Water was all over my counter and floor as well. You would think that the manufacturer would address this. Think that there is a possible safety hazard. Water leaking, coffee maker plugged in electricity... dont know.

I received this cofee/espresso maker as a gift for Christmas 2008. It is leaking from the bottom now and it seems that it's been leaking for a while. I see that a review from 2007 complains of this too. Anyway, I am in NJ and wheelchair bound. I called Delonghi and they want me to get it to Brooklyn or Long Island. I don't think so. This problem seems to have existed for years and they have not addressed it.

Expresso Every Day
My Mom had one and my husband wanted his own, liked it so much we bought one for our son. It works great, we have latte's every day... and my husband loves waking up to the smell of made coffee, better then an alarm clock... It doesn't come with a frothing cup so make sure you get that seperate.

Worked for 10 days ... then, poof !
I bought this in mid- December for my husband's birthday . It has worked well , making cappucino, expresso and drip coffee for 10 days . This Am ( now that we are thoroughly addicted to cappucinos ) , the expresso/cappucino component failed to work. I took it apart completely , read and re- read the troubleshooting guide but, to no avail . So , let's see ... that's $10 a day for coffee .. surpassing even Starbuck's prices ! LEAKS!
This is my second BCO-130T Coffee/Espresso machine. The first one worked well for about 8 months then started leaking. They sent me a new one two months after I called customer service. The second unit is now leaking after 11 months of use. Customer Service said that I will need too send to Appliance Parts Mart to get fixed leaving me with out a coffee pot. I responded with "What am I to make coffe in?" The CSR Rep said that I should buy a cheap coffee maker to have while mine is in the shop being repaired! Do not waste your money!

Leaking mess of a coffee machine
Just as many others have stated, this machine leaks A LOT of water everywhere! It is extremely frustrating, and a huge mess to clean up every morning. The design of the inner tank makes it difficult to clean. I've never had much luck with my $50 machines as they would break after about a year of use. This $150 machine has been defective since day one. It brews a decent cup of coffee, but for any price, I don't think the mess is worth it.

NICE!
I received this item as a Christmas gift. I finally set it up it and tried it tonight 13 Jan. 2010 and the first thing I attempted to make was a cup of cappuccino. Success! I am very satisfied! If you do not read and follow the instructions you won't get the desired results. As for me, I'm sipping on my second cup while typing this...great! This is gift is one that I will be using repeatedly. Kudos to the woman who gave me this wonderful gift!

Questions & Answers
Question : espresso machine?
im going to buy my first espresso machine.are there certain features i shouldnt go without with a new espresso machine purchase?i want a lower end one for affordability reasons....but i still want a decent one.Suggestions?
Answer:
Having owned more than one, I'm happy to share my opinions with you--my current model, a Hamilton Beach that was highly regarded by Consumer Reports, is pathetic! Also, maybe you want a little guidance on how to make the best espresso with whatever machine you buy?So let's talk in general terms--I agree that you want a pump-driven machine, at least 15 psi. Another thing I've observed is that the filter screen and the tamper are important.Get a model with a deep filter screen--my Hamilton Beach has one that's very shallow, and I'm convinced that the steam doesn't stay in contact with the grounds long enough to accumulate flavor. Now, there will come with the machine a tamper, a little plastic thing that you use to pack the grounds into the filter screen--if the tamper is much smaller than the filter screen (like my HB) then it's difficult to pack the grounds properly. Also, they come with the little steam vent for frothing milk to make capuccino--some of the vents have a special tip that incorporates air automatically, others are just plain pointed steel tubing. The air-injector models make it easier. If you're going to be steaming milk, know that skim works best, and get one of those stainless steel pitchers so you can feel the temperature of the milk through the bottom--when it's very hot but not too hot to touch, the frothing is completed. To make really good espresso, you need the best beans. Try to find beans that have been roasted super-dark (of course) but that have an oily sheen on their surface--some places burn the beans and dry them out (Starbucks); the oils in the beans are essential to flavor and also to the creation of that smooth brown "crema" that floats atop the best espresso.Of course, the very best way is to buy whole beans, keep them cool and dry, and grind them just before use. I have a Braun grinder that adjusts to a very fine espresso grind, it works well. And you need to learn to pack the grounds tightly; most good baristas will try to put 35 pounds of pressure on the grounds, and they practice using a bathroom scale.

Question : I have an espresso machine I never use. Are there any alternative uses for an espresso machine?
I do not drink coffee and don't want recipes for using espresso in any way, shape, or form. Surely there has to be some cool use for an espresso machine besides making espresso or hot water? I can make hot water for oatmeal or tea in the micro. If I'm going to keep this machine around, it needs to fulfill a purpose. Is there, perhaps, some practical use for its parts?
Answer:
??? I'm sorry, I don't know what to tell you as far as gutting the parts and building some other practical machine or anything, but I would consider using freecycle.com to find someone who would love to have it.If you feel the need to keep it, I guess depending on the attractiveness of the machine, you could remove the inside parts and use the casing as a planter. Just a thought.

Question : How much coffee ground for an espresso machine do I use in a drip machine?
I bought some coffee that was pre-ground to a fine texture for espresso machines. How much should I use for my drip machine? Half of what I would use with a coarser grind?
Answer:
I would say temper it to your taste, but definitely use less. because the coffee is ground finer there is more surface area exposed to the water so more flavor is extracted from the coffee. depending on the coffee and your personal taste this can be a good or bad thing. it most likely will make your coffee taste bitter since the grinds are in contact with water for a longer time than if you were brewing it with an espresso maker. I would either get a stove top espresso maker (relatively cheap) or junk that coffee and get something ground for your type of machine. Ideally, you will get your best cup of coffee if you buy whole beans and get a grinder and grind just what you need right before you brew it.

Question : Is it okay to fill an espresso machine with milk instead of water?
If I fill the water compartment of my espresso machine with milk instead of water will it clog/ruin the machine? I'm not talking about the frother, which is used to frothe milk. I'm talking about the water compartment that you put water in, which makes steam, which makes espresso. Anyone who's ever owned an espresso machine will know what I'm talking about. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!has anyone actually done it?
Answer:
That'll boil your milk, I mean scald it.Yuck! Why??

Question : What is a good, somewhat inexpensive espresso machine?
I am considering buying an espresso machine for my dorm room next year, yes my dorm room. My college's coffee shop is disgusting. They use pre-ground Folgers for the espresso, among many other things. I've been a barista for two years and know the difference between a really good latte and one that tastes like mud, so quality is important to me.What is a good, relatively inexpensive (less than $300) espresso machine with a steaming wand that I could buy?
Answer:
There are a few really inexpensive (under $100) espresso machines that use pump . They all have some pros and cons - you can read about that here:http://www.espresso-machines-and-coffee-makers.com/inexpensive-espresso-machines.htmlWith your budget, I would recommend that you get one of the lower end Gaggia machine. Gaggia Carezza is a good starter espresso machine and you can get it for around $200:http://www.espresso-machines-and-coffee-makers.com/gaggia-carezza.htmlFinally, do not forget that you will need a good burr grinder. Without a good grinder you cannot really make good espresso. Since the burr grinders are quite expensive, I think that the best options for you is either a good manual grinder (like Zassenhaus) or Breville Ikon or Capresso Infinity:http://www.espresso-machines-and-coffee-makers.com/capresso-infinity-burr-grinder.htmlHope this helps.

Question : How do I start my Breville espresso machine?
I just got a Breville espresso machine for my birthday and I don't know how to start it. I cleaned it, I put in fresh cold water in the water tank and when I turned on the machine I waited for the heating light to turn off. When the heating light was off I switched the machine from standby to espresso and all I got was a loud noise but no water coming out. Can anyone help?
Answer:
Does it have a detachable water tank?if it does this is probably where the problem lies, you have an air bubble between the water tank and the brewing components. jiggle the tank a bit to make sure the connection is secure and try again. the noise shoud go away. If it doesn't or your machine doesn't have a detachable tank call breville's customer service line- it is a fairly common problem with new machines.
|
Question : How can i tell if an espresso machine uses pump or steam?
Was just wandering if the espresso machine has a removable water tank, does this mean that it uses a pump to exert the pressure to make the espresso. The machine im interested in is the Russell Hobbs rh-1915, I've looked all over but cant seem to find out if it uses steam or a pump to exert pressure.
Answer:
I don't know what description you're reading, but it is a pump model (15bar). Often you can also tell by the price, as a pump costs more than a steam device. The Russell Hobbs is supposed to be a pretty good espresso machine. It looks a little like my Rancillio.

Question : Why does a home espresso machine cost as much as a computer?
Even when the body is made out of plastic they are still hundreds of dollars. The components of the machine can't be that expensive. Is there some snobbery factor involved in the pricing since before Starbucks, "everyday people" weren't drinking much espresso.
Answer:
I suppose that would depend on the type of computer you're pricing :-) Some automated home espresso machines cost upwards of $2000. Some reasons why an automated machine would cost so much include:- Construction quality (many heavy duty fabricated components)- Integrated electrics / electronics (an "automated" machine must regulate water temperature and pressure, provide a consistent grind, have durable components, be self cleaning, etc.)- Custom manufactured components (water boilers, pumps, regulators, valves, group heads, etc. are custom manufactured for each machine model, of which few are sold)- Long life (I've owned a $200 Krups machine for 10 years - I would expect a more expensive machine to last for decades, if well maintained)For $200 to $400 you should be able to find a good pump espresso maker (minimum 1200 watts, 15 bars pressure) that will last for years, make consistently good espresso, and be aesthetically appealing). Make sure to complement your purchase with a good burr grinder (about $100).
