Excellent value!

The Mr. Coffee ECM21 is easy to use and clean. The value is unmatched and the performance has been trouble free since we got it. We have not had this machine for long but are very satisfied with it. It takes little counter space and the controls are intuitive. Though not made of the sturdiest materials (although, if you love your machine, you'll be gentle and attentive to proper maintenance), it is hard to imagine a better machine for the money. Well done, Mr. Coffee!

Coffee Maker +

Works Great! Only thing that is missing is a clock and brew timer. If you like having a pot waiting for you when you get up this one won't do it. If I had known it didn't have a clock and timer I would have found one that did. Other than that it's a good coffee maker.

you'll regret it

poor quality. the drip coffee maker turns off for no reason. Button stays
in the on position, but the light goes off and it stops brewing. when i can get it to work, it Takes way too long, coffee is only sorta kinda warm. Does not taste good.
overall cheap feel, all lightweight plastic.
having said all that, the espresso part does work ok.

The smartest purchase, and greatest value!

I love my Mr. Coffee coffee and espresso maker. I was daunted by some of the negative reveiws it received, but I went ahead and purchased it anyway, because it was the only one I could afford. What a great machine! It does everything just like it's supposed to; it was so easy, I didn't even have to read the directions. The only thing I couldn't figure out at first was how the milk frother worked. I did not realize, (stupid me!) that of course you have to add MORE WATER THAN YOU NEED for the espresso, so that the EXTRA can be used for steam. Duh!!
I do not have a problem with coffee spilling everywhere, because I raise the lid with my thumb when I pour. And I think that the coffee is hot enough. Of course, I don't like my coffee scalding hot, either.
All in all, if I had it all to do over again, I would have done it sooner, and not spent so much time wondering and worrying about it. It truly is a remarkable machine for the price.

Get a Krups.

I bought this to replace a Krups espresso/coffee maker combo, and I should have listened to the other bad reviews. You get what you pay for. I have other Mr. Coffee products that I really like, but this is not one. Coffee is too slow to brew, tastes bad, and is awkward to set up in the first place. The components don't fit together well - I have to force the carafe into place. It's very cheap, and I wish I had forked over the dough and gotten a better machine.

Why did I wait so long???

We went to Europe last year and I tasted expresso for the 1st time. I intended to get a good machine after that but procrastinated. Bad decision. The coffee is great, and this machine makes all the difference in the world.

"THE VERY BEST IN IT'S CLASS" and much cheaper!

Capresso Ultima Semi-Automatic machine -- "WORKS" AND "WORKS"............... I don't know if you noticed how quality has drastically changed (for the bad) over the last 10-15 years with EVERYTHING YOU BUY. This machine was very well thought out for basically anyone to use, HANDS DOWN... One of the greatest assets is the fact of being so SIMPLE to clean...

**** FOR ME THOUGH, I CAN MAKE A NICE SIZE CUP OF CAPPUCCINO FASTER THAN MAKING REGULAR AUTOMATIC COFFEE *************

quick to use, easy to clean

I got it 3 week ago, and am very happy with it. It makes good espresso.

I took my time to read the instruction, which was very clear and nicely illustrated. This is helpful.

It's very fast, I turn on the power to heat the water while I grind the beans. When I'm done grinding, the water is heated and ready, I just pour the ground coffee into the machine, turn, press down, and hit a switch, and a few seconds later I get my espresso. Another turn and the used coffee grounds are dumped, and it's ready for the next used. It literally takes less than a minute to make an espresso.

I use it about 3-5 times a week, and clean it once a week. Just pop off the top, rinse off the coffee grounds, and wipe off the little coffee ground left inside the machine (easily accessible). Pull out the bottom to dump the used coffee grounds and overflow. The cleaning process takes only a few minutes. It doesn't get any simpler than this.

Had my unit for 5 years, and still works!

I was happy to see that this product is still selling. I got it as a Christmas gift about 6 years ago and about a year later the top got stuck and it was still under warranty so the company shipped me a new one. Well, here are my pros and cons:
Pros:
- Makes a great lattes, I can make it just the way I want, without paying a fortune.
- I like Starbucks coffee so I buy my coffee from them and have them grind it.
- Customer service was great!
- Steams milk perfectly, not sea form.
- Easy to use.
- Looks cheap, but has held up to 5 years of use.

Cons:
- I can't put 2 scoops in because the pressure handle won't hook correctly, ok with me because I usually only make one cup anyways.
- It doesn't make 2 strong cups of espresso (OK if you don't like your coffee too strong; as I don't)
- Cleaning takes a few mins, so I don't grind my own coffee because between grinding, making the espresso, steaming your milk and cleaning, it can take 10-15mins.

Gave this product a 3 because it isn't perfect, but I suits me, it doesn't leak, it makes lattes just they way I like it, and it still works! Good Luck!

Great Coffee/Okay Espresso - Poor Heating

I got this machine as a Christmas present in December 07 and after using it for over a 1 1/2 years, there are some valid statements in the current reviews. On first opening of the box, I was disappointed in the cheap design of it. The majority of it is plastic, except for the arm, drip grill, and drip dispenser. For $300, I thought it would be designed better.

When I first got it home, I was excited to try and it and have to say it took me a couple of times to figure out the loading of the espresso. The instructions say that a max of 2 cups (using the provided measuring spoon) should be used. What they didn't say is that you have to make sure the arm 'locks' in place to disperse the espresso correctly instead of it draining into the grounds disgard bin and then overflows into the drip drain. This can get messy and it took a couple of times for me to figure it out. In reading other reviews, everything they say is accurate. It is easy to maintain, it does need to be cleaned, but I had it for 1 1/2 years and cleaned it once a week, if not every two weeks. Having the disgard bin is nice and makes it easy for a quick cup of Crema Coffee in the morning if espresso is not your thing. The frother wasn't worth a darn and I ended up warming up my milk via my microwave. Until the power button went out, I had to heat up the coffee in my microwave for 30 secs daily.

Ultimately, in asking the question 'Would you buy it again', the answer is no. I am looking for a single-cup coffee brewer, probably the Breville. Breville BKC600XL Gourmet Single-Cup Coffee Brewer

Residue unacceptable, BAD design

The holes in the sieve for the espresso are too large. Using espresso grind, there is a nasty, unacceptable residue that mixes with the coffee. I called Krups customer service. Rep said my grind was too fine! If the machine can't use espresso grind for expresso, it is designed wrong. As others mentioned, the froth doesn't work correctly. There is no steam left for froth after the espresso it made. If you want froth, you have to reload more water in the machine and wait for it to heat up again!

I have a previous generation Krups 985 machine. Holding the sieves to a light, it is obvious that the new sieve's holes are larger which is the reason that coffee grind passes through the sieve. The only reason I bought a new one is that the on/off switches were broken on the old machine, and I used it by plugging and unplugging it for each use. I'm using the old machine once again.

Pass this model up, or try it and return it.

Another disappointed customer!

My wife doesn't drink coffee, so it is appropriate to say "I" received the XP1500 as a wedding gift. Like others, the SECOND TIME I made espresso, the handle cracked on the espresso grounds holder from the normal pressure of turning it into place. Customer service assured me that they could do nothing unless I had the receipt. This was two years ago, and the machine was a brand new item, so there should have been no question to the age of the machine for warranty purposes, but I had no receipt since it was a wedding gift. They wouldn't even pay the shipping for a new holder. In short, they wouldn't budge, and if I wanted a new grounds holder, I would have to pay full cost to do so. So I kept it, being very careful over the last couple of years to not turn it too hard. Today, it broke further, rendering it useless. To be fair, I have tried to make espresso and cappucino many times, but I have never been able to get a truly good cup from this machine.
Other problems: the frother is too low. You need to angle the milk cup too much to be useful. A half cup of cold milk will turn into a counter full of frothed milk when it's done.
You're better off researching all products and choosing one that is made with better materials, has better reveiws for the quality of the resultant coffee, and going with a company that has BETTER CUSTOMER SUPPORT. There's a reason that "customers who purchased this product also purchased..." "...REPLACEMENT ITEMS!!!"

Makes a good cup of coffee and espresso

I've had this machine for about two weeks and it works great. Granted it's not a high-end machine, but it gets the job done. After reading other reviews about the handle breaking off the espresso pitcher I've been gentle with mine and haven't run into a problem.

I'd recommend this machine if you want a combo unit and don't want to pay $100s more. It makes a great cup of coffee and an awesome latte. I might have given it a higher rating if it had a thermal caffe.

Rating :

Good coffee, disappointing machine

We've been through two of these machines in five years. That may be good for some people but for $100 we thought it would work longer. Even with constant cleaning, after awhile it takes forever to brew a pot and most of the water/coffee is lost in steam. The handle also broke off of the espresso ground holder the first or second time we used it. We're going for another brand this time around.

Rating :

A good concept cheaply executed

Here's the skinny -
This is the least expensive coffee/espresso maker I could find. I use it daily. It's a steam driven machine, so if you are a serious espresso fiend, you'll be disappointed. It just doesn't crank out enough pressure to give you an authentic espresso. It does an ok job at a fast shot of really strong coffee.

The thing that really and truly is disappointing is the glassware. I'm pretty careful about how I take care of my things. But repeated heat + washing makes the plastic handle on the espresso carafe get a little brittle. Then the handle and lid break off of the carafe. Replacements for the carafe are $20 or so. And they don't have any kind of warrantee on the carafe. You can call Krups and ask for one, but their customer service is pretty rude about it. That effort will not be met with success.

Sent Back 3 Times For Service!!!

This is one expensive, stylish, piece of junk! The people in Krups customer service are very nice, but what good is that if Krups can't make this expensive coffee maker work? First the electronics (or the pump) died. I sent it in for repair, and after more than a month, they sent a new machine. However, the new machine leaked from the Espresso side from the first day so I had to send that one back too. Then I waited over a month again to get it back, and the service center replaced two electronics boards and didn't fix the leak. . So back it goes for a THIRD TIME! All in all, with all the shipping, etc, it's getting close to 6 months. Seriously, if it wasn't so expensive, I would have just thrown it away by now. Save your money! Don't buy this machine!

LOVE this machine

I read almost all of the reviews on this machine before buying it and I almost didn't because of them. Let me tell you that I absolutely LOVE this machine. I bought it as a person who enjoys coffee but LOVES Latte's and espresso. I just use the espresso blend from Starbucks and pretty much just follow the directions and it's always made it PERFECTLY! The steamer works flawlessly too. I'm not sure what the others were complaining about, especially the one's complaining of the mess. If you're making espresso or latte, it's going to be messier than coffee...hello! Anyways I highly recommend this machine it is VERY simple to clean and EASY and I use it almost everyday! Please feel free to contact me with any questions kryshoc at gmail dot com.

Keep your old pot for back-up

We bought this for our anniversary to retire our 18 yr old Bunn coffee maker & have the luxury of also having espresso. Maybe we should have known better as most coffee makers with espresso features are very expensive. It worked for 8 months & totally quit. We followed instructions & sent to to a service center in IL, not a cheap thing to ship. We received no acknowledgment that the machine was received by anyone - no note, email or anything. The 18 yr old Bunn brought back into service. In 5 weeks it just came back and it worked for 2 months & died again. A friend told me to write the company as perhaps I just got a "lemon", after reading other reviews it is evident that this is more the norm & I am not willing to pay another $30 to ship this anywhere. I also found the machine difficult to program, the coffee never hot enough and the lid on the pot was very tricky to get on right. We bought it at Crate & Barell and probably should tell them they should not stock this machine maybe that will get through to Krups.

Customer Review :

So far I like it

I did a lot of research on the machines & discs/pods, & read most of the reviews, good & bad, on the Braun Tassimo, Keurig & Senseo machines, plus a few cheap ones. The only thing that held me off was the few bad reviews/complaints. But I finally ended up getting this Tassimo, even though it was more expensive, for the reason that it does everything. The other machines I looked at mainly do only coffee or coffee & tea, while this unit does coffee, latte, cappuccino, tea & hot chocolate. I didn't get it to make coffee, I got it to make everything with a single system.
There is little to no clean up (rinsing the pierce unit after a milk disc & emptying the drip cup takes only seconds), no pot to clean, no grounds, no pouring water into the unit (& all over the counter) because the clear water container snaps off for rinsing/filling, & there are 3 stores in my area (& I live in a very small town) that carry the discs plus I also ordered some from CoffeeForLess, which arrived quickly. The sound doesn't bother me either, as others have mentioned, because it lasts only a few moments, & I was already used to the coffee machine at work which grinds the beans (& sounds like an airplane taking off). I like being able to drink something different every day & have recommended this unit to friends.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the price (more than the others) & the size (just wish it was a little smaller).
One final note - I mentioned this machine to the Doctors where I work & they immediately decided to get one for our lounge & also considering it for the lobby out front for the patients to use to have a variety of drinks available.

Love it

It's easy to use. It's fun to use. The coffee is fresh and superb. Your experience will vary based on the type of coffee but, for example, I find the Starbucks Verona to be on par with a fresh cup from the store! Would definitely buy again.

dont loose the puncture thingy

I bought this because it is the only system with a quality coffe to go with it (starbucks). This is actually better than I thought. It really makes a great cup of coffee; equivalent to the brew from starbucks.

HOWEVER the "capuccio" system from Gevalia is only OK. I prefer to just add milk rather than that disk.

BE CAREFUL because there is a piece of plastic which punctured the disk to allow it to work and which can come off when you remove the disk at the end and get it thrown out. The company answered the phone promptly; wanted 10 bucks for a replacement; I complained and now they are sending a free replacement. I will be more careful about that puncture device.

Happy Coffee / great for entertaining

We love this machine! It is quick, clean, quiet.... fabulous. We have done all the combinations of the coffee flavors available. The cappaccino is unbelievable, it is a two step process unlike other machines so it is so authentic in flavor and look. It came with a great recipe book for more creative coffee beverages that has us really inspired. We do look forward to more flavored coffees to be introduced though as it is limited.

Questions & Answers
Question : espresso machine?
im going to buy my first espresso machine. are there certain features i shouldnt go without with a new espresso machine purchase? i want a lower end one for affordability reasons.... but i still want a decent one. Suggestions?

Answer:
Having owned more than one, I'm happy to share my opinions with you--my current model, a Hamilton Beach that was highly regarded by Consumer Reports, is pathetic! Also, maybe you want a little guidance on how to make the best espresso with whatever machine you buy? So let's talk in general terms-- I agree that you want a pump-driven machine, at least 15 psi. Another thing I've observed is that the filter screen and the tamper are important. Get a model with a deep filter screen--my Hamilton Beach has one that's very shallow, and I'm convinced that the steam doesn't stay in contact with the grounds long enough to accumulate flavor. Now, there will come with the machine a tamper, a little plastic thing that you use to pack the grounds into the filter screen--if the tamper is much smaller than the filter screen (like my HB) then it's difficult to pack the grounds properly. Also, they come with the little steam vent for frothing milk to make capuccino--some of the vents have a special tip that incorporates air automatically, others are just plain pointed steel tubing. The air-injector models make it easier. If you're going to be steaming milk, know that skim works best, and get one of those stainless steel pitchers so you can feel the temperature of the milk through the bottom--when it's very hot but not too hot to touch, the frothing is completed. To make really good espresso, you need the best beans. Try to find beans that have been roasted super-dark (of course) but that have an oily sheen on their surface--some places burn the beans and dry them out (Starbucks); the oils in the beans are essential to flavor and also to the creation of that smooth brown "crema" that floats atop the best espresso. Of course, the very best way is to buy whole beans, keep them cool and dry, and grind them just before use. I have a Braun grinder that adjusts to a very fine espresso grind, it works well. And you need to learn to pack the grounds tightly; most good baristas will try to put 35 pounds of pressure on the grounds, and they practice using a bathroom scale.

Question : Where can I rent an espresso machine from in Southern California?
I'm having an espresso bar at my wedding and want to rent an espresso machine just for a day or two. The only place I could find wanted to send a barista with it, which of course would cost more. I already have a barista lined up to do it, but can't find a place to get the espresso machine from. Thanks!

Answer:
Party Rental Companies Smart n Final

Question : I have an espresso machine I never use. Are there any alternative uses for an espresso machine?
I do not drink coffee and don't want recipes for using espresso in any way, shape, or form. Surely there has to be some cool use for an espresso machine besides making espresso or hot water? I can make hot water for oatmeal or tea in the micro. If I'm going to keep this machine around, it needs to fulfill a purpose. Is there, perhaps, some practical use for its parts?

Answer:

Question : How much coffee ground for an espresso machine do I use in a drip machine?
I bought some coffee that was pre-ground to a fine texture for espresso machines. How much should I use for my drip machine? Half of what I would use with a coarser grind?

Answer:
I would say temper it to your taste, but definitely use less. because the coffee is ground finer there is more surface area exposed to the water so more flavor is extracted from the coffee. depending on the coffee and your personal taste this can be a good or bad thing. it most likely will make your coffee taste bitter since the grinds are in contact with water for a longer time than if you were brewing it with an espresso maker. I would either get a stove top espresso maker (relatively cheap) or junk that coffee and get something ground for your type of machine. Ideally, you will get your best cup of coffee if you buy whole beans and get a grinder and grind just what you need right before you brew it.

Question : Is it okay to fill an espresso machine with milk instead of water?
If I fill the water compartment of my espresso machine with milk instead of water will it clog/ruin the machine? I'm not talking about the frother, which is used to frothe milk. I'm talking about the water compartment that you put water in, which makes steam, which makes espresso. Anyone who's ever owned an espresso machine will know what I'm talking about. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks! has anyone actually done it?

Answer:
That'll boil your milk, I mean scald it. Yuck! Why??

Question : Why does a home espresso machine cost as much as a computer?
Even when the body is made out of plastic they are still hundreds of dollars. The components of the machine can't be that expensive. Is there some snobbery factor involved in the pricing since before Starbucks, "everyday people" weren't drinking much espresso.

Answer:
I suppose that would depend on the type of computer you're pricing :-) Some automated home espresso machines cost upwards of $2000. Some reasons why an automated machine would cost so much include: - Construction quality (many heavy duty fabricated components) - Integrated electrics / electronics (an "automated" machine must regulate water temperature and pressure, provide a consistent grind, have durable components, be self cleaning, etc.) - Custom manufactured components (water boilers, pumps, regulators, valves, group heads, etc. are custom manufactured for each machine model, of which few are sold) - Long life (I've owned a $200 Krups machine for 10 years - I would expect a more expensive machine to last for decades, if well maintained) For $200 to $400 you should be able to find a good pump espresso maker (minimum 1200 watts, 15 bars pressure) that will last for years, make consistently good espresso, and be aesthetically appealing). Make sure to complement your purchase with a good burr grinder (about $100).

Question : How do you clean an espresso machine?
We have a Krups espresso machine, and we have read the manual and cleaned it out with vinegar like it said, but the flavor is still not the same as it was brand new. We use it everyday, so I was wondering if there is something we could do to get the old coffee smell/flavor out of the machine?

Answer:
I am only familiar with big hotel machine and my own cheap Mr. coffee pot. I run espresso grind through it. Make sure the area above the grounds is clean. May need a brush. If a full run with water at the end of the day doesn't do it; you may want to ad water mixed with one or two teaspoons of baking soda per litter. Sweetens up my pot.

Question : How can I use a 220V Lever Espresso Machine in the US?
I have a 220V pull lever espresso machine from italy. The lever machines have a heating element but no pump so there is no motor involved and no cycles to worry about. What would be the easiest way to use this machine. Should I just get a step up transformer?

Answer:
Residential voltage in the US is 240 volts. The machine would run hot. The best thing to so would be to get a buck-boost transformer to reduce the voltage. Otherwise you could try it and see how long it lasts.

Question : How is an espresso machine different from a normal coffee machine?
I've made espresso in my coffee machine and it tastes pretty good, is there a big difference? I've just been putting espresso beans in my coffee maker.

Answer:
As espresso machine uses pressure to brew, making espresso more concentrated than coffee. As a result, espresso tends to be much stronger than regular coffee. Also note that any type of coffee can be used to make espresso, it's the machine that makes the difference. Remember: coffee is to espresso as cocaine is to crack. It's a little undignified, but it certainly helps me remember.

Question : what is the best way to clean an espresso machine?
What is the best way to clean out the espresso basket/filter part of the machine so the coffee runs through faster?

Answer:
If you kept the warranty/product information guide, look there. If not,go to the manufacturer's website and you should be able to find your answer. Make sure you have the model and possibly serial #'s. If it's not there, e-mail them. I'm sure they'll be happy to get back to you.
